The best natural hair care products are the ones that are best for YOUR natural hair. When I was a loose natural, there were products that I favored. Now that I have Sisterlocks, I’m not using several of those products and have began using a new line of products. Natural hair types vary from one to the next, and even within the same hair type, one natural hair product may not be best for all individuals in that hair type. Let’s face it. We have different hair types within our own natural hair.
So, the best natural hair care products will be different from woman to woman. The purpose of this article is to arm you with information that will help you to decide the best natural hair care products for you. Ask yourself:
- Do I want to only purchase organic products?
- Am I focusing on growing long natural hair?
- Am I willing to create my own remedies for my black natural hair?
- Do I have certain issues with my hair, such as dry hair or a flaky scalp?
- Is healthy hair a priority?
The best natural hair care products are the ones that you have researched and tested on your own natural hair. Yes, trial and error can be a pain. But your hair will thank you.
Many naturals are leaving this off their list of best natural hair care products and opting for a no-poo routine, meaning they conditioner wash. These naturals, instead, remove build-up by clarifying their natural hair. This can be done with a baking soda and water mix. Follow up with a conditioner wash. An apple cider vinegar and water mix also removes residue and restores moisture.
If you need shampoo on your list of best natural hair care products, then opt for shampoos that are free of sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These two ingredients are extremely drying to natural, afro hair. Alcohol in all of its forms is another shampoo ingredient to avoid because of its drying effect.
The best natural hair shampoos have moisturizing ingredients in them, such as jojoba, avocado, shea butter and essential oils.
If you are a no-poo/co-washing natural, then conditioner is a staple in your beauty cabinet. An instant conditioner, which must be washed out in one to three minutes, hydrates thirsty, natural hair. These conditioners do not strip the hair of moisture, like traditional shampoos do.
Again, steer clear of sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate and alcohol. Instead, look for coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter and other moisture-infusing ingredients.
A moisturizer should be a top priority on the list of best natural hair care products. One of the absolute best natural hair care products is shea butter. You find this ingredient in shampoo and conditioner for natural hair. You find it in moisturizers, treatments and other hair styling products. Pure, unrefined shea butter locks in moisture without clogging your pores and restructures damaged, dry hair.
Other moisturizers could contain avocado, honey, olive oil, essential oils and good-old water. It seems to be most often forgotten, but water can be all the moisturizer that your natural afro hair needs.
Natural Hair Tools
Some of the best natural hair care products lie in the natural hair tools. These include your combs, brushes and other natural styling tools, like a hooded dryer. A wide-tooth comb is best for kinky, coily and curly hair types. A boar bristle brush smooths natural hair, and some naturals use a Denman brush for detangling and product distribution.
A hooded dryer, a wonderful investment, can be used for a deep conditioner treatment or a hot oil treatment. A hooded dryer allows the conditioner or oil to penetrate the hair shaft and repair the hair from deep within. It also can help with drying hair if you were trying to speed up the progress of a roller set or wet set. A hooded dryer will not damage your hair because it uses indirect heat, or heat that does not sit directly on your fragile strands.
Additional Natural Hair Care Products
If you want natural hair color, henna is the way to go. Henna not only colors the hair, but also strengthens natural hair and makes it shine.
When you sleep at night, you should always sleep on satin or silk. Either purchase a silk or satin pillow case, scarf or bonnet. Cotton will pull all of the moisture out of your natural hair.
For hot oil treatments meant to replenish moisture and fortify natural hair, various oils, such as olive oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil and rosemary oil, can be used.
