8 Hair Growth Oils That Encourage Natural Hair to Grow Long

By Terez Howard

Hair growth oil is not a miracle product.  There is no product on the market today that will make hair grow faster than what it is already programmed to do.  Hair growth oil can condition and moisturize dry hair, strengthen strands and prevent breakage.  Hair growth oil can also stimulate hair follicles to grow on the scalp where you have experienced hair loss.  Your natural hair will not grow faster; it can and will grow healthier.

The 8 hair growth oils which encourage natural hair growth are rosemary oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil, coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, carrot oil and emu oil.  Most of these oils are essential oils, but it is not necessary that a hair growth oil be such to stimulate and promote natural hair growth.  Hair growth oil can be used as part of a scalp massage, hot oil treatment or, in some cases, as a conditioner.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil has a strong reputation for being a hair growth stimulator. In The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, this hair growth oil dilates blood vessels and stimulates cell division. This process then stimulates hair follicles to grow, and in cases of hair loss, produces new hair.

A scalp massage with rosemary oil can rid your scalp of dandruff and flakes and nourish the scalp.  It is believed to slow down premature baldness and gray hair.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil  moisturizes natural hair, cleanses the scalp and minimizes dandruff and an itchy scalp.  A clean scalp means the pores on your head will be open and ready for growth.  This hair growth oil keeps bacteria off the scalp and has been used to treat seborrheic dermatitis, a chronic skin disease which produces scales on the scalp.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil has been used to treat alopecia, a broad, medical term for hair loss.  This hair growth oil has been proven to stimulate hair growth.  In a University of Maryland study, 86 people who suffered from alopecia areata that administered a lavender oil scalp massage, along with other essential oils, over the course of 7 months reported significant hair re-growth.  This group experienced more hair re-growth than those who did not massage with essential oils.

This hair growth oil has a sweet, soft scent and may actually stop hair loss.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil softens and aids in detangling natural hair.  It fights against dandruff and strengthens damaged, dry hair. As a hair growth oil, it keeps hair from losing protein, one of the major reasons hair breaks and is lost.  A scalp massage with coconut oil twice a week can stimulate circulation and give you a moisturized scalp.  The massage makes it easier for hair follicles to absorb coconut oil’s valuable nutrients.

Use coconut oil as a natural hair conditioner to give you longer, thicker, natural hair.

Olive Oil

Olive oil nourishes dry hair.  This relatively inexpensive hair growth oil improves natural hair’s elasticity and penetrates the hair shaft to smooth and soften hair.  Basically, olive oil helps you to have healthy hair, which will, in turn, help your natural hair to grow and keep it from breaking.  Also, olive oil makes a wonderful hot oil treatment.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil contains the right healing properties to repair damaged hair.  It is easily absorbed in the scalp and dissolves the sebum (the oil your scalp produces naturally) a scalp might over produce.  Jojoba oil is structurally similar to sebum.  According to the Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, dry scalp problems can be solved with jojoba oil, which acts as substitute sebum, preventing tangles and moisturizing the hair follicle.

This hair growth oil has been known to develop new hair cell growth, counteracting hair loss.  Jojoba oil cleans, conditions, moisturizes and softens natural hair.

Carrot Oil

Carrot oil is rich in Vitamins A and E, nutrients the hair needs to be healthy.  It repairs split ends and strengthens strands.  This hair growth oil fights breakage, so you retain the length you naturally grow.

Emu Oil

A carrier oil, emu oil has been known to stimulate hair growth.  It can lengthen the growth phase of the hair cycle.  Dr. Michael Holick conducted a study involving hair growth and emu oil.  He found that test subjects who used emu oil had more robust hair follicles and more than 80 percent of “sleeping” hair follicles were awakened and started growing.

This hair growth oil can penetrate the hair and scalp, without leaving an oily residue behind.
